Just-A-Buck in Garnersville is not your usual dollar store. It is owned and run by Venture, a not-for-profit provider of habilitative services for those with disabilities. Venture is “an advocate for the rights, liberties and opportunities of all developmentally disabled persons in society, a champion of the right to a valued and dignified place in the community, and a protagonist for their liberation from the cultural prejudice that limits full acceptance of their birthright as Americans.”
One of their many programs includes their role as franchise owner of Just-A-Buck in Rockland County. The store employees 10 disabled individuals and “teaches invaluable job development skills to those with barriers to typical employment and serves as an important site for community integration between disabled and non-disabled populations”. They offer bulk ordering for government, business and non-profit entities along with holiday and special event supplies.
At HBC we love supporting local stores like Just-A-Buck that have such a positive impact on our community. A simple trip to pick up a few seasonal items for the office has us leaving with a smile on our faces that is worth a whole lot more than Just-A-Buck.
